S1 series stops the noise, brings in the data

The latest version of Megger’s S1 series of insulation testers offers the standard requirements for a solid piece of insulation testing equipment: insulation resistance (IR), polarization index (PI), dielectric absorption ratio (DAR), step voltage (SV) and dielectric discharge (DD) testing.  Additionally, the S1 series increases safety, allows for precise testing and accounts for the highest noise an operator may encounter in the field, setting it a step above the standard.

Testing and safety

The S1 series offers testing safety, even in demanding applications, in both the 5 kilovolt (kV) and 10 kV models; every product in this series now meets the requirements for use in CAT IV 600 V applications (in line with IEC 61010-1).

With 8 kV transient immunity, the S1 series is both suitable for measurements at low-voltage installations and offers high-voltage immunity (up to 8 kV). That’s double the rating of previous insulation tester options.

Megger also supplies the S1 series with a fully specified guard terminal, a unique feature in this industry. Acting as a shunt circuit for parallel leakage points, the guard terminal (labeled with a “G” on the unit) allows the operator to sectionalize testing. As a result, users can achieve fast, accurate results even with equipment possessing high levels of surface leakage, providing more reliable information to assist in fault diagnostics.

Noise

Along with meeting requirements and possessing a guard terminal for enhanced testing, the S1 series also offers industry-leading 4 milliampere (mA) noise rejection. Supported by sophisticated hardware and software, the series delivers accurate and reliable results even in noisy electrical environments (substation switchyards, for example) where other insulation testers are rendered useless.

Default settings suit the vast majority of applications, but the experienced operator may use the optional software filtering of the S1 series to fine-tune testing optimization, especially with demanding applications.

Additionally, the S1 series delivers a higher charging current than the standard insulation tester in the industry, which saves time and minimizes the risk of measuring before the set test voltage is reached, and it offers a variable test voltage up to 10 kV (depending on unit) to allow for the early detection of insulation deterioration.

The software of the S1 series has been upgraded to PowerDB LITE, which comes standard in the latest S1 series package. PowerDB LITE allows test results from the S1 series to be kept, trended and reported.

Cut the Cost of Eliminating Battery Failure

The new BVM battery monitor from Megger offers a convenient and reliable way to monitor the voltage of individual cells during storage battery discharge testing, allowing failing cells to be readily located. This means that battery performance and reliability can be restored by simply replacing defective cells, rather than the much more costly option of replacing the whole battery.

Designed for testing large storage batteries of the type used in electricity substations, telecommunications facilities and data center UPS installations, the BVM uses a modular design, with one BVM module required for each cell in the battery bank.

Each BVM module connects to the next with a single-cable daisy-chain connection. Up to 120 modules can be used simultaneously when testing a battery bank. This arrangement allows the BVM system to be used to test battery banks of all sizes, from the smallest to the largest. All BVM modules are identical and may be used anywhere in the string.

When used in conjunction with Megger’s TORKEL battery load tester and PowerDB LITE software, BVM battery voltage monitors allow completely automated battery bank capacity tests to be performed in compliance with the IEC test method. The tests log individual data for every cell, and also comply fully with NERC/FERC requirements.

BVM modules are supplied fitted with a convenient dolphin-clip connector, but this can easily be exchanged with any standard banana-plug clamp or extension cable, thus providing maximum flexibility for use with batteries of almost any type. A time-saving auto-discovery feature is also provided, enabling the host device to automatically determine the number of cells in the battery under test, identifying the cells sequentially.

Two user-selectable voltage ranges are offered by the BVM modules: 0 to 5 V DC and 0 to 20 V DC. Resolution is 1.00 mV on both ranges with an inaccuracy of < 0.1% of full scale ± 0.002 V. The maximum battery string voltage supported by the BVM system is 300 V DC.

Megger ups the ante in oil testing

Redesigned in their entirety after a detailed analysis of user requirements, the new range of oil test sets from Megger sets new standards for performance, ease of use, reliability and value for money. The new OTS range offers laboratory instruments for testing up to 100 kV, and portable instruments, including the world’s lightest oil test sets in the 60 kV and 75 kV to 80 kV ranges.

Megger’s new oil test sets offer convenient and precise thumbwheel adjustment for electrode spacing. Unlike all other currently available instruments, the adjuster incorporates a locking mechanism that completely eliminates the problem of accidental electrode movement during testing.

The test sets also use a robust, low cost vessel that has been specifically designed to help users deal with the practical aspects of oil sampling and testing. Other key features include a unique test chamber drain for spilt oil, automatic oil temperature measurement, support for both output voltage and output current breakdown detection, and facilities for storing results internally and on standard USB memory sticks.

The instruments are supplied pre-loaded with all common oil test standards currently in use around the world. The USB port can, however, be used to upload new versions of the standards as they are developed, providing users of the instruments with a high degree of future proofing.

The OTS range includes five models. The OTS60AF, OTS80AF and OTS100AF are primarily intended for use in fixed locations, such as laboratories, and offer maximum test voltages of 60 kV, 80 kV and 100 kV respectively. The OTS60PB and OTS80PB are compact lightweight instruments for portable use and offer maximum test voltages of 60 kV and 80 kV respectively.

All models feature a colour display with straightforward menu navigation, which makes them fast and easy to use. In addition, the laboratory models have a large keypad to facilitate rapid data entry.

Across the range, Megger offers a configure-to-build service. This allows purchasers to specify the precise combination of options they need, and then Megger builds the instrument to suit. This means that users can have all of the features and facilities they need, without having to pay for unwanted options.
